The Patuxent Presbyterian Church to Welcome a New Pastor
California, MD—On Sunday, November 15th, members of Patuxent Presbyterian Church voted unanimously to approve Reverend Matthew Pooley as the next Pastor/Head of Staff, set to begin on January 1st, 2021.
“I sense that God is calling me to help develop a church where worship planning is collaborative, connecting the Gospel to real needs of the people and community. I am called to a context where I can develop any kind of leaders – staff, Session, or lay leaders; young or old – and can equip them to develop leaders, too. ...Above all, I want to serve and lead a church whose primary mission is to make and grow mature disciples of Jesus,” stated Pastor Matt.
Pastor Matt graduated with a B.A. degree in Music and Religion from Bates College in Lewiston, ME, and a M. Div. degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, MA. He has served as the Associate Pastor of Group Life at Sandia Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque, NM for the past 11 years.

His ministry experience includes: overseeing ministry to young professionals, creating a “Dads’ Ministry Team”; shepherding as many as 40 young professionals or young parents into volunteer/leadership roles; leading a team of four program staff in creating and sustaining a “Wednesday Fellowship” program – a midweek evening meal for all ages followed by an hour of classes for all ages; overseeing the ministry teams for small groups, evangelism/outreach, and welcome/involvement; and teaching spiritual gifts-type classes such as SHAPE. He has initiated many new ministries. Pastor Matt, with other staff, was instrumental in growing the number of young families and young professionals involved in the life of their church, while also being loved and respected as a pastor to all ages. Over the past eight years he has preached every four to six weeks, collaborating and meeting regularly with the music directors of their traditional and contemporary services.
Pastor Matt, his wife Diana of 14 years, and their four children are excited to get to know the people of Patuxent Presbyterian Church, the surrounding community, and to explore the land, water and wildlife of Southern Maryland.
